In an urgent plea to all 1.9 million customers, WSSC Water has implemented an “essential water use only” directive across Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. The directive follows a significant increase in water main breaks and leaks triggered by ongoing frigid temperatures.
Current Situation
As of this evening, WSSC Water crews are addressing 52 active breaks and leaks, with the potential for additional, unreported incidents. Officials warn that immediate conservation efforts are crucial to avoid the issuance of a Boil Water Advisory, maintain water system storage, and ensure adequate water supply for fire protection.
“Water is safe for use at this time, but we need the cooperation of all customers to prevent further strain on the system,” stated WSSC Water in a public release.
How Customers Can Help
Residents are encouraged to follow these measures until further notice:
- Shorten water use times: Take shorter showers and turn off faucets promptly.
- Reduce toilet flushes: Flush only when absolutely necessary.
- Limit appliance use: Postpone using washing machines and dishwashers.
Customers who observe running water or smell chlorine, a disinfectant used in water treatment, are urged to immediately report these signs. Reports can be made by calling WSSC Water’s Emergency Services Center at (301) 206-4002 or via the WSSC Water Mobile App through the “Report a Problem” feature.
Challenges in Repairs
To stabilize the system, WSSC Water has increased its workforce, deploying additional crews and emergency contractors to identify and fix leaks. However, repair times may be prolonged as inspectors prioritize shutting down damaged mains to preserve pressure across the system. This may lead to extended water outages or low pressure in some areas.
“Your cooperation is essential in helping us prevent a full-scale water advisory and ensuring adequate resources for all residents,”
