With Labor Day coming on Monday, September 2, the DC government has announced the closure of some public facilities. Residents of Washington, DC should be aware of several facility closures and service modifications.
While some essential services will remain open, many government offices and public facilities will be closed for the holiday. Here’s a comprehensive list to aid in navigating the city during this time.
Government Offices and Schools
DC Public Schools (DCPS) will be closed, resuming normal operations on Tuesday, September 3. All DC Public Library branches, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, will be closed. The Department of Human Services Economic Security Administration Service Centers will not be open.
DC Health & Wellness Center and DC Health’s Vital Records Division will be closed. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will be closed on both Saturday, August 31, and Monday, September 2, reopening on Tuesday, September 3.
Recreational Facilities
DPR’s indoor recreation centers and community centers will be closed.
Homeless Services Centers
Specific homeless service centers will be closed, including the Sasha Bruce Youth Drop-In Center, Latin American Youth Center Youth Drop-In Center, Adams Place Day Center, and 801 E Day Center.
Public Works
The DC Department of Public Works will not conduct household trash and recycling collection on Labor Day. The Benning Road Transfer Station is closed for renovations. The Fort Totten Transfer Station will be closed to the public.
Construction and Transportation
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will suspend non-emergency construction and work zones. Reversible lane operations will be suspended on major roadways, including Canal Road and Rock Creek Parkway. The DC Department of Buildings will enforce restrictions on construction without proper permits.
Parking Enforcement
All parking enforcement will be suspended, except for Streetcar ticketing and towing.

Emergency Services and Shelters
All low-barrier shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness will continue to operate 24/7, including New York Men’s Shelter, Adams Place Shelter, Emery Shelter, Pat Handy Women’s Shelter, and Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter.
Day Services
The Downtown Day Services Center at 1313 New York Avenue NW will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., offering services such as showers, laundry, medical and mental health treatment, and computer access. Zoe’s Doors Youth Drop-In Center at 900 Rhode Island Avenue NE will provide 24-hour support to youth experiencing homelessness.
Mental Health Services
The DC Stabilization Center at 35 K Street NE will be open. The Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) at 1905 E Street SE will be available. The Community Response Team will be operational. The Children and Adolescent Mobile Psychiatric Service (ChAMPS) will offer on-site help for youth mental health emergencies.
Parks and Recreation
Several outdoor pools will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for the final day of the 2024 season, including Banneker Pool, Francis Pool, Hearst Pool, and other pools across the city (check local listings for specifics). Spray parks will also be operational during these hours.
