The Time for Working People to Lead is Now – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at the DNC

Six years ago, I was waiting tables in New York City, fighting off foreclosure, and struggling to afford basic healthcare. My family and I faced the same challenges millions of Americans confront daily—wondering how we would make it to the next paycheck, how we would survive after my father’s unexpected passing. The struggle was real, and it was relentless. But it was also these very struggles that fueled my determination to serve, to advocate for those who feel unseen and unheard in a political system that too often turns a blind eye to working people.

Today, I stand before you not just as a Congresswoman, but as someone who has walked in your shoes. I know what it’s like to worry about rent, to see a loved one battle illness without the security of health insurance, and to feel powerless in the face of an indifferent system. These experiences shape who I am and how I lead, and they are the very reasons I believe that this election is a pivotal moment for our nation.

We have a rare and precious opportunity before us: to elect Kamala Harris as our next President and Tim Walz as our Vice President. In Kamala Harris, we have a leader who understands what it means to be middle class because she comes from the middle class. She knows the importance of affordable rent, access to groceries, and the urgency of life-saving prescriptions. Kamala is committed to our reproductive and civil rights, to taking on corporate greed, and to securing peace both at home and abroad. As I said during the Democratic National Convention, “In Kamala Harris, I see a leader who understands.”

But let’s be clear: the road ahead is not easy. Over the next 78 days, we must pour every ounce of energy into making history on November 5th. Kamala and Tim are the leaders we need, but they cannot do it alone. We must also elect strong Democratic majorities in the House and Senate to deliver on an ambitious agenda for the people. This isn’t just about one election; it’s about shaping a government that works for everyday Americans—people like you and me who have spent long hours on our feet, working tough jobs, and struggling to make ends meet.

Republicans have often attacked me, saying I should “go back to bartending.” To that, I say, “I’m happy to any day of the week,” because there is nothing wrong with working for a living. This election is about more than just political power; it’s about reclaiming the dignity of work and ensuring that every American, regardless of their job or income, has a fair shot at success.

Donald Trump would sell this country for a dollar if it meant lining his own pockets. He’s shown us time and again that his allegiance lies with the wealthy and the powerful, not with the hardworking people who make this nation run. As I stated in my speech, “You cannot love this country if you only fight for the wealthy and big business.” True patriotism means fighting for all people, especially those who have been marginalized and overlooked.

So, let’s send a loud and clear message on November 5th: The people of this nation will not go back. We choose a new path, one that opens the door to a new day—a day for the people and by the people. This is our moment to rise, to organize our communities, and to elect leaders who truly understand the struggles we face.

Together, we can build a future that works for all of us. Thank you, and God bless you all.
