NEW YORK-SEPTEMBER 25–26, 2018, as world leaders gathered for the UN General Assembly in September, the Gates Foundation held its second annual Goalkeepers event in New York City on September 25 & 26 and TanTV Studios Creative Director, Adedayo Fashanu was one of the esteemed journalists present to cover the event. Adedayo conducted interviews with speakers and attendees from around the world who joined for this two-day event, sharing their stories, ideas, and challenges.
This year, both the event and the Goalkeepers Report highlighted how the tremendous growth in youth populations will be a turning point for future progress in health, equality, and development. It celebrates and inspires a new generation of young advocates who work on behalf of these causes.

President Emmanuel Macron joined Bill and Melinda Gates at this year’s Goalkeepers event. Stand up comedian and Africa Correspondent for the Daily Show, Loyiso Madinga, hosted the Goalkeepers Global Goals Awards. Savannah Sellers, NBC news host and BBC world news presenter Nancy Kacungira, served as the hosts on the 26th.
Across the two days, speakers such as Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations; Erna Solberg, Prime Minister of Norway; David Miliband, president and CEO of the International Rescue Committee; Eddie Ndopu, award-winning activist and humanitarian; Kailash Satyarthi, Nobel Peace Laureate and child rights activist; Jaha Dukureh, women’s rights activist and founder of Safe Hands for Girls; and Mona Chalabi, data journalist and illustrator all graced the stage with powerful messages.
Some incredible performers entertained such as Ed Sheeran who was joined by Naturally 7, Fatoumata Diawara, the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and Nicolette Robinson.
The two day event took place at Jazz at the Lincoln Center, 10 Columbus Cir, New York, NY 10023, USA. As expected, both events were at full capacity.
The Goalkeepers Global Goals Awards was held on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, 6:30 p.m. for canapés and conversation. The seated show began at 7:30 p.m. , after which there was a reception with lots of food, drinks, and conversations. Guests were asked to attend the awards in a Cocktail outfit .
On Wednesday, September 26, 2018 – 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., opening session began promptly. Indeed it was a remarkable full day event of inspirational speakers, entertainment and discussion. Guests were asked to come in Business casual attire.

Masego “Maps” Maponyane is a South African television presenter, actor, fashion designer, speaker, model, creative consultant, voice over artist, philanthropist and business entrepreneur. Scheaffer Okore is the Vice chairperson of Ukweli Party and former head of programs for civic engagement at Siasa place.She holds a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Diplomacy from the University of Nairobi.Scheaffer is an activist in Kenya who has been vocal about social justice, human rights, feminism, and Gender Based Violence. She serves on the Gates Foundation Goalkeeper Advisory Board.
TANTV caught up with VICTOR IGHARO at the Gates Foundation Goalkeepers event 2018. He is a pharmacist and alumni of the World Bank Institute on health financing. He also holds Master in Business Administration, Master in Public Health, and Doctor of Pharmacy. Victor is an impact investing enthusiast with interests in exploring social innovation, new investment models and market-driven approaches in promoting global health excellence and sustainable development in Africa. He currently lives in Nigeria with his family with whom he enjoys travelling, learning new cultures, trying new cuisines, and public speaking.
Her name is Erica Armah Bra-Bulu Tandoh, also known as DJ Switch. According to her personal website, Tandoh is from Suaman Dadieso in the western region of Ghana.In September 2018, she opened the Bill and Melinda Gates’ Foundation’s annual Goalkeepers event in New York City, as the warm up act to French President Emmanuel Macron. TANTV caught up with her at the Goalkeepers event where she shared her thoughts on why young people should be a part of the Global Goals!
