Winfrey, who invested $43 million in the company in 2015, is a major shareholder and has played a crucial role in its marketing and advertising. Winfrey clarified her departure, stating,

“I will not stand for re-election at its next shareholder meeting in May.”

She recently disclosed her use of weight-loss drugs as a “maintenance tool,” which has contributed to a significant drop of 27% in Weight Watchers International shares. Expressing her commitment to addressing obesity as a chronic condition, Winfrey affirmed her ongoing collaboration with Weight Watchers.

In a philanthropic gesture, she announced her decision to donate all her shares, approximately 10% of the company, to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Weight Watchers, struggling with the challenges posed by the popularity of weight-loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic, reported a net loss of $88.1 million in the last quarter of 2023. The company’s acquisition of digital health company Sequence, valued at $132 million, was positioned as a strategic move to integrate prescription medications into its services.

Winfrey’s departure coincides with a shifting landscape in the weight-loss industry, marked by the emergence of anti-obesity drugs. The company aims to navigate this transformation by incorporating prescription medications into its offerings, with Weight Watchers CEO Sima Sistani emphasizing the importance of a combined approach to “nutrition and behavior-change.”

Despite these strategic moves, Weight Watchers faces skepticism in the market, with concerns about its brand’s competitiveness in the evolving weight management landscape.
