While endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president, Obama said ‘This is going to be historic’ referring to her being the first black female US president if she wins the election in November.

Mr Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, both officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate via a post on X featuring a video in which the Obamas convey their support directly to Harris.

The video, widely shared on various platforms, captures a heartfelt conversation between the Obamas and Harris. Barack Obama tells Harris, “Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and to support your campaign all the way to the Oval Office.” Michelle Obama adds, “I’m proud of you. This is going to be historic.”

In their joint statement, the Obamas lauded Harris’s qualifications and character. They remarked, “We believe President Biden made one of his best decisions by choosing Kamala. Her resume speaks for itself.” The statement highlighted Harris’s vision, integrity, and strength, expressing strong confidence in her ability to secure the presidency and effectively lead the country.

Harris, visibly touched by the endorsement, expressed her gratitude and excitement. “Oh my goodness. Michelle, Barack, this means so much to me,” she said, hinting at future collaborative efforts on the campaign trail.

This endorsement follows a wave of support from high-profile Democratic figures after President Joe Biden’s unexpected withdrawal from the race. Biden himself extended his “full support and endorsement” to Harris soon after his exit. Other prominent Democrats, including Bill and Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and Hakeem Jeffries, have also rallied behind Harris.

The timing of the Obamas’ endorsement had been the subject of speculation, with some suggesting their initial silence was intended to let Biden’s departure take center stage. Sources reveal that Barack Obama had been in close contact with Harris and had privately supported her, waiting for the opportune moment to make it public.

Harris has already garnered the backing of a majority of Democratic delegates, positioning her as the likely official nominee at the party convention in August. She has been actively campaigning, addressing various groups, and targeting what she describes as “extremist” Republicans.

In response, Republican nominee Donald Trump has turned his attention to Harris, launching sharp critiques on social media and refusing to commit to a debate until she is officially confirmed as the Democratic nominee.

As the campaign heats up, the Obamas’ endorsement is seen as a crucial boost to Harris’s campaign, leveraging their significant popularity and influence within the Democratic Party to strengthen her bid for the presidency.
