Washington DC — Nigerian Center is set to host a virtual event to empower international students with crucial knowledge about off-campus work authorization. The event, scheduled for August 21, 2024, at 6:30 PM, offers crucial information for international students on work authorization, particularly in light of ongoing c for several African countries including Nigeria, Congo, Sudan, and Mauritania.

The center’s proactive approach follows a series of national protests in Nigeria from August 1-10, highlighting the country’s economic challenges. These protests have far-reaching implications, especially for the 23,348 Nigerian students studying in the United States and numerous others from various African nations.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Nigerian Center has been at the forefront of advocating for these students. In March, they led a coalition of over 50 NGOs in requesting the Biden Administration to designate Special Student Relief (SSR) benefits. SSR is a provision that allows the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to suspend certain regulatory requirements for F-1 students during emergent circumstances like financial crises.

While the center continues to push for SSR designation, they are not waiting idly. The upcoming virtual event, “Work Authorization for International Students,” aims to provide immediate assistance to students who may need to apply for off-campus work authorization individually.

“We understand the stress and uncertainty these students are facing,” said a spokesperson for the Nigerian Center. “Our goal is to equip them with the knowledge and resources they need to navigate these challenging times while maintaining their legal status in the U.S.”

The event promises to cover various aspects of work authorization, learning about  F-1 visa work regulations, how to apply for off-campus work authorization, and the process for extending or renewing work permits

As the Nigerian Center prepares for this important event, they are reaching out to various networks, diaspora groups, and educational institutions to spread the word.  This initiative by the Nigerian Center not only addresses the immediate needs of students affected by the current economic crisis but also sets a precedent for supporting international students during times of global economic instability
