Grammy-winning artist Jon Batiste recently disclosed that he has recorded “half of my next album” during his recent trip to Nigeria as Bill Gates‘ guest.
The 37-year-old musician, hailing from Louisiana, joined Gates in Nigeria through the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). The Foundation, renowned for its commitment to advancing development across Africa, played a crucial role in facilitating this impactful visit.
During his ten-day stay in Nigeria, Batiste immersed himself in the local music scene, collaborating with various Nigerian artists. This creative synergy resulted in the completion of a significant portion of his next album. Batiste expressed profound appreciation for the vibrant Nigerian culture, particularly savoring traditional dishes like Jollof rice.
Reflecting on the experience, Batiste described the trip as transformative, saying, “The ten days here felt like a month. The cultural and sensory experiences have been profound, and I feel deeply inspired by the people and their music.” He further emphasized the spiritual connection he felt with the music created during this period, attributing it to the unique energy and experiences of the trip.
Gates, who recently completed a busy visit to Ethiopia and Nigeria, noted Batiste’s presence as a highlight of his trip. The Gates Foundation’s work in these countries, which spans over 15 years, focuses on various development goals, including health and nutrition. Gates’ trip included visits to innovative agricultural projects in Ethiopia and discussions on healthcare improvements in Nigeria.
Batiste’s involvement in the Gates Foundation’s efforts underscores a shared commitment to addressing global issues such as hunger and malnutrition.
Batiste gained recognition at 17 with his debut album “Times in New Orleans.” He has won five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for “We Are” in 2021, and was recently featured on Afrobeats artist Fireboy’s album “Adedamola.”
