The nation’s capital is transforming its downtown into a winter wonderland as the Downtown Holiday Market marks its 20th anniversary with an innovative addition: an indoor skating rink at the historic National Building Museum. The expanded celebration, running from November 22 through December 23, signals a bold reimagining of DC’s holiday traditions.

“The Downtown DC Holiday Market has become a cherished tradition during the holiday season,” Mayor Muriel Bowser noted, highlighting how the event “brings our community together, supports local businesses, and spreads festive cheer.”

At the heart of the festivities, the DowntownDC Holiday Skate Spectacular introduces a synthetic ice rink operating from December 16 through January 4. While skating access is complimentary, visitors can rent skates for $5. The rink’s programming includes themed events ranging from disco nights to children’s sessions, adding a dynamic element to the winter calendar.

The celebration extends beyond skating, with F Street NW hosting the traditional holiday market featuring artisan crafts and local delicacies. This year’s market benefits from a partnership with The Makers Show, a women-owned platform enhancing vendor diversity and visitor experience.

“This market has been a beloved tradition for two decades, and we are thrilled to elevate it this year,” said Gerren Price, DowntownDC BID’s President and CEO, connecting the expansion to the mayor’s broader Downtown Action Plan.

New attractions include “Frosted at Franklin Park,” offering seasonal entertainment through December 21, and the debut of the National Mistletoe Activation at 8th and K Streets NW in late November.

Supporting these festivities, the Economic Development Administration has allocated $6.5 million through the Family Fun Destinations Grant program. Recipients include prominent cultural institutions like Step Afrika! and The Washington Ballet, tasked with creating engaging community experiences.

Nina Albert, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, emphasized the initiative’s broader goals: “We are excited to collaborate with local organizations to provide enjoyable and enriching holiday programming.”

The expanded celebration represents a significant step in DC’s efforts to reinvigorate its downtown area, offering residents and visitors alike a fresh perspective on holiday traditions in the capital city.
