In her opening letter, Mayor Bowser expressed pride in the significant progress made in transforming DC’s public schools over the past two decades. “As we approach nearly two decades of transforming our public schools into the bright spot that they are today, there is so much progress for our city to look back on and be proud of,” she stated. “And as we enter this new school year, there’s a lot to look ahead to and be excited about.”

The 2024 Back-to-School Guide, available at backtoschool.dc.gov, covers a wide range of topics crucial for families and students. It includes a summary of immunization requirements for the upcoming school year, along with a calendar of free immunization clinics scheduled for August. Parents can also find information about child care and early learning resources, such as the My Child Care DC online platform and subsidized childcare programs.

For high school students, the guide highlights career and technical education programs that prepare them for high-wage, in-demand careers. It also outlines free after-school and out-of-school time opportunities available through various District agencies, including DCPS, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services, and the Learn24 network.

To further support student success, the guide provides information on tutoring and academic support resources, such as the Office of the State Superintendent for Education’s High-Impact Tutoring Initiative and the DC ReEngagement Center.

Mayor Bowser encourages families to join District agencies at Back to School Day at RFK on Friday, August 23, from 12 pm to 4 pm. This event offers a fun-filled celebration with activities ranging from haircuts to school supply distribution, helping families prepare for the new school year.
