The Bowser Administration kicked off the 2024-25 school year by hosting a Special Education conference for educators on August 15. Hundreds of school leaders gathered at the Kellogg Conference Hotel at Gallaudet University for this all-day event organized by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE).

Themed “Building Capacity for a Brighter Future,” the institute aimed to enhance educators’ skills in improving outcomes for students with disabilities. Interim State Superintendent Dr. Antoinette S. Mitchell emphasized the importance of equipping educators with the necessary tools to help all students succeed.

The conference featured breakout sessions based on the Special Education Performance Report (SEPR), complementing OSSE’s existing services for families and educators of students with disabilities. These services include the Strong Start DC Early Intervention Program for infants and toddlers, and the DC Special Education Hub, which provides multilingual support and educational events for families.

OSSE continues to offer vital services such as student transportation for those with disabilities and professional development opportunities for educators. The DC Apprenticeship in Teaching program provides cost-free pathways for paraprofessionals and high school graduates to become certified teachers in high-demand areas, including special education.

As families prepare for the new school year, they’re encouraged to utilize these resources. The Special Education Institute serves as a crucial kickoff to the 2024-25 school year, empowering educators with the knowledge and resources needed to support students with disabilities and ensure their educational success.

This comprehensive approach underscores the Bowser Administration’s commitment to inclusive education, aiming to create a supportive learning environment for all students in the District of Columbia.
