Two men were killed while another and a 2-year-old girl were wounded in a shooting in Southeast D.C. on Thursday, July 18. The incident occurred around near the intersection of 22nd and Savannah streets SE, when multiple armed shooters jumped out of a white sedan and opened fire.
Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith reported that officers on patrol heard gunfire minutes before 11:30 and found three men shot at the scene. Two men were pronounced dead, while a third was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries alongside a 2-year-old girl, who was part of a group exiting a daycare facility for a morning walk.
Chief Smith emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “This is another example of gun violence that we cannot have in our communities. We’re sick and tired of this.” She added, “We want to say to our community, we are working hard every single day to ensure that this kind of violence is decreased in our community. My condolences again to the families who were impacted by this senseless act of violence.”
Police are now searching for a blue Dodge Charger with heavily tinted windows, believed to have been the escape car after dumping the white sedan at the scene. The city’s Real-Time Crime Center captured images of the Charger and a white sedan, which police suspect the shooters used to escape.
Chief Smith urged the public to come forward with any information, saying, “If you know something, say something.” The police also urge anyone with information that can help to call at 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
The names of the deceased men and the motive for the shooting have not been released. This incident comes after a man died from his stab wounds on the same day Police Chief Pamela Smith celebrated her first year in office.
