Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Maryland Governor Wes Moore are set to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming 2024 presidential election according to sources. This endorsement comes at a pivotal time when President Joe Biden announced on Sunday, July 21, that he will not seek reelection and has endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee. Biden’s decision follows mounting pressure from within his party after his debate performance on June 27.

Recent polls show Harris leading President Biden by four percentage points. The poll, conducted earlier this month, indicates a tight race within the Democratic Party, with Harris emerging as a strong contender. Her popularity appears to be growing not only within her party but also in a head-to-head matchup against former President Donald Trump, where she shows competitive numbers. Across recent polls, Ms. Harris trails Mr. Trump by two percentage points nationally on average, 46 percent to 48 percent, an improvement over Mr. Biden’s standing in the race who trailed Trump by three percentage points in the polling average.

In his statement, Biden expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as President and highlighted his decision to prioritize his responsibilities for the remainder of his term over seeking reelection. He cited achievements during his tenure, such as appointing the first African American woman to the Supreme Court, handling the COVID-19 crisis, and overseeing a robust economy.

Governor Moore and Mayor Bowser’s endorsements are expected to rally significant support from key demographics in Maryland and Washington, D.C., regions known for their diverse and influential voter bases. Both leaders have expressed their confidence in Harris’s leadership and vision for the country, highlighting her experience and commitment to addressing critical issues such as healthcare, education, and social justice.

Harris, who made history as the first female, first Black, and first Asian American Vice President, has been positioning herself as a candidate who can unify the Democratic Party and build on the achievements of the current administration. Her campaign strategy focuses on addressing economic disparities, housing, advancing climate change initiatives, and protecting voting rights, themes that resonate with a broad spectrum of voters.

As the Democratic National Convention approaches, the endorsements from Moore and Bowser, coupled with Biden’s endorsement, could play a crucial role in solidifying Harris’s frontrunner status and energizing her campaign efforts in Washington, D.C., and Maryland.
