Tomorrow, September 3, 2024, at 7:00 PM ET, the Food Freedom Fighters coalition will host a virtual event titled “Food Freedom Fighters for Kamala,” aimed at supporting Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign.

This initiative seeks to promote a Food Bill of Rights that addresses food insecurity, supports local economies, and emphasizes food as medicine. The event features prominent speakers, including Oklahoma City Councilmember Nikki Nice, award-winning cookbook authors Toni Tipton-Martin and Adrian Miller, and various activists and food entrepreneurs like Ehime Eigbe and Chef Pierre Thiam.

The coalition emphasizes the urgency of food justice, particularly in light of rising food insecurity rates in the U.S., where 12.8% of households faced food insecurity in 2022, disproportionately affecting Black and Latino communities. The event aims to amplify the voices of those impacted by food policies and advocate for systemic changes in the food system.

The event will be co-hosted by Tambra Stevenson, MPH, MA,  Food Bill of Rights Champion, and Organizer, Food Freedom Fighters and Janet Helm, MS, RDN, Registered Dietitian, Food and Nutrition Journalist.

Stevenson, the founder of the Food Freedom Fighters, stressed the importance of the event. “Organizing the Food Freedom Fighters for Kamala is about ensuring that the voices of those most impacted by our food system—farmers, chefs, advocates, and everyday citizens—are heard and empowered. The Biden/Harris Administration has made significant strides in food policy, but the work is far from over. Our future, health, and rights are on the ballot, and together, we can make sure that food remains a cornerstone of the fight for justice.”
