“Black Hair Therapy” is a TANTV series that spotlights the incredible hairstylists in our community doing what we call ‘God’s work’ in making us fall in love with our hair texture and being proud to wear our crowns! These stylists inspire us through their own personal hair journey, trailblazing career paths, and unique experiences in getting clients to heal just by sitting in their salon chairs!
Khadija Harris is a senior cosmetologist with over a decade of experience. She founded ‘More to the Chair’ Salon, located at 8730 Georgia Ave 400E Silver Spring Maryland. She has cultivated it as a space that transcends the traditional salon model. ‘Black hair salons are known for being a safe space where women share and get vulnerable’, says Khadija. With this in mind, she established ‘More to the Chair’ salon to go beyond merely a place for haircuts and styling but to serve as a sanctuary where hair care uplifts one’s spirit which infers to the original intention behind the name that more happens when a client sits on her salon chair.
Harris is challenging beauty norms through her vision of community upliftment and Invites those interested in experiencing the unique blend of haircare and mindfulness.
Her salon’s philosophy is rooted in the foundational principles that our Black hair care has to be handled with intentionality given the trauma history and roots we share as part of our heritage. Harris says one’s lifestyle should encompass good nutrition, strong mental wellness, and regular hair maintenance for healthy hair and a relationship with our hair.
Harris has a mindful approach to haircare and says her clients leave with a style they love and always gain new knowledge and tools to maintain their hair’s vitality between visits.
